Analytics and tracking

Google Tag Manager on a Kotisivukamu site

Google Tag Manager is a container that loads other tracking codes into the site, such as Google Ads conversions or ad network tags. The tags are managed in Tag Manager’s own interface, so they can be added and changed without touching the site.

How it works on Kotisivukamu

Tag Manager is not one of the site’s built-in settings. What is built in is Google Analytics 4, added with just the measurement ID, and Meta Pixel. Both load only after the visitor has accepted the matching cookies. If you need only one of them, you do not need Tag Manager.

A Tag Manager container can be added to the site on request, and it goes behind cookie consent. But the container can load any code at all, and the site cannot see what is in it. So the container’s content, and making sure its tags respect the visitor’s consent, are your and your marketing partner’s responsibility. Tag Manager mainly suits the case where a partner runs several tags and wants to change them on their own.

Step by step

  1. First consider whether Google Analytics 4 or Meta Pixel added directly by ID is enough. If it is, you do not need Tag Manager.
  2. If you need a container, create an account and a web container in Tag Manager and copy its ID, which looks like GTM-XXXXXXX.
  3. Ask for the container to be added and say who manages its tags.
  4. Check in Tag Manager’s preview mode that the tags fire only after cookies are accepted.

Google Tag Manager: frequently asked questions

Should Google Analytics be added through Tag Manager?

Usually not. Google Analytics 4 is built into the site and is added with just the measurement ID. Tag Manager is worth it only once there are several tags.

Who is responsible for what the container loads?

Whoever maintains the container, meaning you or your marketing partner. The site loads the container only after consent, but the settings of the tags inside it are made in Tag Manager, and we do not review them.

Does Tag Manager slow the page down?

The container itself is small, but every tag it loads fetches content from another service. The more tags, the slower the page. Unused tags are worth removing from the container.
