Microsoft Clarity on a Kotisivukamu site
Microsoft Clarity is Microsoft’s tool that shows as heatmaps where people click on a page and how far they scroll. It also records sessions that show how a single visitor moved around the site.
How it works on Kotisivukamu
Clarity is not built into the site the way Google Analytics 4 is; it is added on request with the project ID. Because Clarity uses cookies and records what visitors do, it loads only after the visitor has given consent in the cookie banner. Before consent, the Clarity code is not loaded.
Clarity suits a short investigation, for example when you want to know why a form is not being filled in or whether an important button gets noticed. It is worth watching recordings for a few weeks and removing the tool afterwards if there is no ongoing need. For visitor numbers, Kotisivukamu’s own cookie-free analytics is enough.
Before asking, decide what you want to find out and how long Clarity stays in use, and update the privacy policy. Recordings are no use if nobody watches them, so it is worth setting aside time for the review, for example an hour a week for a few weeks.
Step by step
- Create a project in Clarity for your site’s address.
- Copy the project ID from Clarity’s settings and ask Kamu to add it to the site.
- Publish the change, accept cookies on the site and check in Clarity that the first sessions appear.
Microsoft Clarity: frequently asked questions
Do the details typed into a form show in the recordings?
Clarity has settings for masking sensitive content. It is worth checking the default masking and the options on Clarity’s own pages before taking it into use, and mentioning it in the privacy policy.
Does Clarity cost anything?
Clarity is free at the time of writing, but it is worth checking the terms on the service’s own pages. Adding it is agreed when you ask for it.
Does Clarity need to be mentioned in the privacy policy?
Yes. The privacy policy should say that sessions are recorded on the site with Microsoft Clarity, what data is processed and that recording starts only after consent.
