n8n on a Kotisivukamu site
n8n is an automation tool you can use as a cloud service or run on your own server. It is used especially by businesses that want to keep data in their own hands or need their own code as part of a workflow.
How it works on Kotisivukamu
When a visitor sends the site’s form, the message is saved in the dashboard and forwarded to your n8n workflow. It carries the form fields, such as name, email and message, plus which page and which form it came from. n8n acts as a relay service that takes the messages on in the right format, for example to a CRM, a spreadsheet or the team chat.
If you run n8n yourself, it must be reachable from the internet at an ordinary https address. An n8n that only runs inside the office network does not receive the messages. If you want the workflow to accept only your own site’s messages, n8n can require an identifier whose value is added to the forwarding settings on request. The identifier never shows on the site.
Step by step
- Add a Webhook node at the start of the workflow in n8n and copy its production address.
- Add the address in the dashboard as the form’s forwarding target, or ask Kamu to do it.
- Activate the workflow and send a test message with the site’s form.
- Check in the dashboard that the delivery succeeded, and in n8n that the fields arrived.
n8n: frequently asked questions
Why does the test address not work?
n8n gives a separate test address that only works while the workflow is being tested in the editor. Use the production address in the forwarding and activate the workflow.
Does an n8n that is only on the internal network work?
No. Messages are only forwarded to addresses reachable from the internet. An n8n inside an internal network needs a public https address, for example through a hosting provider.
What does n8n cost?
The cloud service is paid, and the terms for self-hosting depend on how it is used. Check the current details on n8n’s own pages.
How do I make sure a message came from my own site?
The easiest way is to require an identifier in n8n whose value is added to the forwarding settings on request and otherwise exists only in n8n. Messages without the right identifier can then be rejected in the first step of the workflow. The identifier can be changed at any time.
